About Amirah

There’s a life-force within your soul, seek that life. There’s a gem in the mountain of your body, seek that mine.

-Rumi

Born in Tehran during the revolution and raised in California, Amirah creates stories crossing genre, borders, and states of longing; her work lives in the ache between exile and arrival. Her truest education has been lived, on the road, translated to the page. She’s currently writing, painting, and listening for the owls that visit her junglalow in Costa Rica. But you might find her anywhere: an émigré with a paintbrush, a notebook, and a story still forming. She writes for the ones who want to come undone.

Amirah has worked across continents and disciplines from teaching women in Saudi Arabia and consulting for UNESCO in France to brokering real estate deals across multiple U.S. states. She holds a BA in Political Science from the University of Southern California and a Master’s in Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies from the American University of Paris.

How vain it is to sit down to write when you have not stood up to live.

-Henry David Thoreau

Everything is Haram (Forbidden) - My Saudi Stories

In Everything Is Haram, an independent American woman navigates the oppressive constraints of a pre- MBS Saudi Arabian society, where women are subjugated by patriarchal rule, strict religion, and ancient traditions. The Arabic word haram, meaning forbidden, governs every part of daily life, from running in public and dating to owning a dog or even plucking eyebrows. The result is an atmosphere that feels apocalyptic over Western senses, a world where the simplest acts become charged, dangerous, and volatile.
